4 WARREN STARS! ★★★★

23587984

Colleen Hoover, the New York Times bestselling author of Maybe Someday brilliantly brings to life the story of the wonderfully hilarious and charismatic Warren in a new novella, Maybe Not.

When Warren has the opportunity to live with a female roommate, he instantly agrees. It could be an exciting change.

 Or maybe not.

Especially when that roommate is the cold and seemingly calculating Bridgette. Tensions run high and tempers flare as the two can hardly stand to be in the same room together. But Warren has a theory about Bridgette: anyone who can hate with that much passion should also have the capability to love with that much passion. And he wants to be the one to test this theory.

Will Bridgette find it in herself to warm her heart to Warren and finally learn to love?

Maybe.

 Maybe not.

Gideon calls me his angel, but he’s the miracle in my life. My gorgeous, wounded warrior, so determined to slay my demons while refusing to face his own.

At the brightest time in our lives, the darkness of his past encroached and threatened everything we’d worked so hard for. We faced a terrible choice: the familiar safety of the lives we’d had before each other or the fight for a future that suddenly seemed an impossible and hopeless dream…

Book Review - Exquisite by Ella Frank

13 Nov 2014

2 PEACHY STARS! ★★

♥ Buddy Read with the lovely Rachel! ♥

“I believe in fate and I believe you were supposed to walk into my life, so Mason could walk into yours.”

I've had this on my TBR for almost a year and when my awesome GR buddy, Rachel suggested this for our BR, it was all the motivation I needed to finally check out this author's books.

Exquisite is about Dr. Lena, a paediatrician who has her heart guarded up ever since the passing of her little sister, Carly in a car accident. For 9 years, she has been carrying the guilt of losing her and sworn never to let anyone get too close to her.

All of this changes one day when one man ended up delivering her flowers. Meet Mason, the owner and head chef of his restaurant, Exquisite. Fate is a funny thing when this sexy chef ended up helping his mum be a floral delivery man for one day and little did he know, he would encounter one uptight woman who completely infuriates him.

After seeing some rave reviews for this one and this author's books, I do find myself disappointed that I'm in the minority for not entirely loving it. For the first 20% itself, I couldn't see myself connecting to either MCs. In fact, things escalated so quickly between these two that it came off a little unrealistic for me. I can make some exceptions for instalust/love sometimes but these two totally had it for each other before Chap 1 ended, what?!

My biggest problem with this book definitely lies with the heroine, Lena. She totally got on my nerves for the first half of the book, her outburst of temper tantrums totally took me aback and it annoyed me how much she over-reacted at some scenes. I felt like her misplaced guilt wasn't a strong enough reason for her to act the way she did.

Honestly, I didn't understand why Mason is so attracted to her in the first place and thought he deserved so much more than Lena! And even after she nearly screwed over Mason's career, there was so little grovelling done on her part and it made me upset cause I was looking for that angst to deliver but it didn't at all :(

I did however enjoyed the banters between Lena and Mason and I'm glad Mason stood up to her at one point because she was starting to go overboard with her crazy outbursts. The second half of the book was definitely more bearable for me with some emotional scenes but if I viewed the book in its entirety, I thought the story plot was completely lacking and there was barely any character development.

Overall this book just didn't work for me as I would like to. I skimmed a lot after a while and even the steamy scenes can barely catch my attention anymore. I can't even begin to tell you how ridiculous this one scene (or actually, a line) sounded because if the author was trying to make it sound hot, trust me it did the total opposite.

It would probably be a good read if you're looking for a quick, sweet and emotional one with some great secondary characters plus a dash of steamy scenes (the peaches one was quite interesting LOL). But since I have a tendency to rate my books heavily based on the heroines & character development, Lena definitely did not excel in that department.

Having heard that the 3rd book in this series is the best one and hearing most of my buddies liking this author's work (especially the M/M ones), I would still give her books a shot in the future :)

Thanks so much Rachel for the amazing BR! So glad we have the same issues with this one & I enjoyed your rants! :) Hope our next one will be better! ♥

Cassandra Clare Week! Book Review - City of Glass (The Mortal Instruments #3)

5 STARS! ★★★★★

I'm finally at the halfway mark of this series, WHOOP! :D A bit slower than I imagined due to real life (blergh) but I'm enjoying it! This one has been my favorite instalment so far and deservedly gets a 5-star from me as compared to the previous two! If it's any indication, this series is getting better as I move along *happy dance*

As the title suggested, a huge portion of the book takes place in the City of Glass, also known as Idris. I just loved the setting of this one as I kept imagining of some sort of Victorian setting for Idris. And technically Idris is like the holy Vatican city for the Shadowhunters, just sayin.

Also, can I just take a moment and say why the hell does poor Simon finds himself falling victim to so many bad incidents?! D: GAH LEAVE THE POOR GUY ALONE! :( Funny how I feel so invested in his character now when he was my least fav in the beginning ♥♥

A whole bucketload of action, action and more action in this one - I AIN'T COMPLAINING! I guessed some of the twists coming but some still took me by surprise. But overall I was super hooked to this one and I really enjoyed where the direction of the series has taken with this one Great addition to see the Downwolders and Shadowhunters binding forces, nice!.

With the introduction of Idris brings new characters in play; so naturally one or two played a really vital role in the series. But I really enjoyed with this instalment is that people are finally knocking some sense into Clary! At first I really thought she is just too reckless for her own good, putting herself & others at risk, argh!! So yes, I LOVE how Jace and Isabelle told her off, which I felt made Clary's character so much more well-developed later on.
"You act as if you're not a part of all this, of our world; you stand on the sidelines, but you are a part of it. You're central to it. You can't just pretend to be a bit player forever, Clary, not when you're Valentine's daughter. Not when Jace is doing what he's doing partly because of you."

This book definitely answered a good portion of the questions from the past ones and most importantly, Jace and Clary's true origins *ahem* ;)

Definitely the best of the 3 so far for me because it has hit the point where the characters have reached that level of maturity in what they do and the direction the series took allowed them to delve into some really serious & intense moments which really let the characters shine throughout.

It has everything from heartbreak, anger, sadness and lastly happiness; this one ended in a really nice place but I'll still be eager to pull through the next 3 ones! :)

Cassandra Clare Week! Book Review - City of Ashes (The Mortal Instruments #2)

4.5 STARS! ★★★★☆

Book 2 really picks up from the first one and if it wasn't for my real life work, I would have enjoyed reading this in one complete sitting, loved it!

I was already sucked in from the first chapter as it starts off very eerily with the introduction of Agramon (this demon reminds me of a Boggart in HP but much more scary!). With Valentine making his intentions loud and clear to the Clave and all Downworlders alike, horrendous killings are popping up everywhere and Valentine shows no mercy in his pursuit of true power. One of the scenes I truly enjoyed was at the Seelie Court. Felt that it was such an amazing addition to the book. I loved how CC described the faeries and how they were perceived to be - it gave a very eerily feel that somehow got me hooked.
"She looked again - and froze. The faces that had seemed so lovely to her were still lovely, yet behind them lurked something vulpine, almost feral."
The book still maintains an incredible pace which never leaves you a dull moment and there were times that it sent my heart into a complete turmoil as my emotions went into overdrive with some of these characters! I went into a panic attack when Simon became a vampire, ASKASJASLKA!!!

A bunch of new ones got introduced; noteably the Lightwoods, Imogen and Maia. Was glad to see more of Magnus Bane becoming a recurring cast in the series (gotta love warlocks with a lot of wit!). I think Simon was just amazing in this one; I got into a total frenzy with a couple of tear-shedding moments that involved him, GAH MY FEELS! ♥ Clary & Jace's relationship is still at a push-pull stance as they battled their feelings after that motha of revelations. SEXUAL TENSION
OVERLOAD.

Tons of action and wonderful one-liners, this was a great one to build up a stronger platform for the series! The end battle scene was thrilling and you just can't anticpate who will or will not survive! I'm already in the midst of the 3rd book right now & am already loving it more with each instalment! :D

Cassandra Clare Week! Book Review - City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments #1)

6 Nov 2014

4 STARS! ★★★★

Today marks the start of my CC week where I'll be reading her Mortal Instruments series, woohoo! I've been having most of her books on paperbacks and in an attempt to tackle my paperbacks TBR, this series has been on top of my list. I'm gonna change up my review style a little bit; keeping it short and simple so that I can tackle as many books in this series as I can in my CC-dedicated week.

Loved the world of Shadowhunters that CC is trying to draw us in by having the current setting blend in with the modern city background. I liked the idea of a whole new world hidden in our real world. Was sucked in from the first chapter itself as it starts off with a thrilling scene and later catapulted to a whole new world where we start to meet more than just the Shadowhunters: namely vampires, warlocks, demons, werewolves to name a few.

However there were some minor moments that I thought the infodumping was a little extreme to my liking in where I had to retrace my steps back sometimes (I'm a little slow in absorbing all the new terminologies lol). Once I got the hang of it, I was completely enthralled by this new world and found the entire read to be entertaining and addicting! CC really managed to weave this intricate universe that poses so many secrets that have yet to be unlocked.

I loved the dynamic between Clary and the Shadowhunters gang; Jace, Alec and Isabelle. Everytime they kicked butt, I feel like doing fistpumps! And admittedly at first, I wasn't a huge fan of Simon but he slowly grew on me during the second half of the book. Secondary characters like Magnus and Luke were also characters that I've come to like and drew me in as I'm certain there's a whole lot more to their backstory.

Valentine had me drawing some parallels to Harry Potter's Voldermort where the bad guys aren't necessarily born evil but they're driven by a stronger cause in what they believed would save their own kind. And the plot twist at the end there from Valentine? It kinda makes you wanna weep and wish you could erase that part!

What I enjoyed most: Jace/Clary witty banters. And almost everything that Jace says :D I like how he cracks me up in even the most dire situation but it was nice to see a glimpse of a different side of him every now and then ♥

Since I've watched the movie (& loved it!) before reading this one, I didn't really get the oomph factor since it felt a like a refresher read for me especially with the movie being rather spot-on with most of the key events played here.

It was action-packed that kept me on my toes and I'm eager to explore this whole new world that has yet to come. Super excited to see how the relationship between Jace & Clary will play out in the upcoming books.

 Off to the next one!

5 EPIC LILO STARS! ★★★★★

PURCHASE ON: AMAZON

Two addicts. One epic love story.

Prepare for the worst.

That’s what Lily and Lo try to do when Jonathan Hale schedules an “important” meeting. The problem: after being swept into the public eye and battling their addictions, they’re not sure what the worst is anymore.

In a sea of many changes—including Ryke & Daisy living with them—Lily realizes that the best part of her fluctuating hormones might just be the worst.

Her sex drive is out of control.

Loren knows that she’s insatiable, but he’s not giving up on her. She’s too much a part of him. And as he carries more and more responsibility, some of the people that he loves doubt his resolve.

In the conclusion to their love story, Lily & Lo stand side-by-side to fight, one last time, for their happily ever after.

**AUTHORS' NOTE** Due to the 2-year gap between Addicted for Now (Addicted #2) and Addicted After All (Addicted #3), you must read Thrive (Addicted #2.5) or the Calloway Sisters spin-off series before reading Addicted After All.
