On the day of her Presenting, in front of the entire Byern Court, seventeen-year-old Cyrene Strohm's lifelong plans come to fruition when she's chosen for one of the most prestigious positions in her homeland—an Affiliate to the Queen.

Or so she thinks.

When Cyrene receives a mysterious letter and an unreadable book, she finds nothing is as it seems. Thrust into a world of dangerous political intrigue and deadly magic, Cyrene's position only grows more treacherous when she finds herself drawn to the one man she can never have...

King Edric himself.

Cyrene must decide if love is truly worth the price of freedom. Find out in this first book in USA Today bestselling author K.A. Linde’s new Ascension series.

"She has this pull. When I'm with her, the throne slips away and I'm just a man with a beautiful woman."
Every now and then, I do find myself indulging into YA fantasy reads because it gives me the escapism I need from the contemporary ones. So when I found out that KA Linde, the queen of angst had decided to venture into this genre, I was particularly excited! And she didn't disappoint as I was left dying for the next one already by the end of the book.

The Affiliate doesn't just tell a romance tale in a fantasy world but keeps you on your toes with mysterious twists and thrilling suspense; all the signs of an amazing series to come. Our young yet spunky heroine, Cyrene has just been bestowed with one of the most prestigious roles: to be the Queen's Affiliate. While embracing her new duties, Cyrene slowly learns more about the path she is about to embark on. Evil forces lurking to threaten our characters, strange occurrences that can't be explained. All these had me flipping the pages faster after the last to know the outcome.

What I loved most is the alluring world that she created and its vivid description of the characters' dressing and the backdrop setting. I'm just...WOW. Honestly I had it all painted out in my head and my mind just went into a frenzy with making graphics just for this book alone. The rich, lush Victorian-isque setting just adds onto the romance element of the read which I really loved.

Just like most YA fantasy series, I think it's important to note that the first book lays out all the groundwork and world-building. So, naturally it does take a while to acclimate with the story and its characters, getting used to the story lingos. Once I'm past that stage, I found myself immersed in that world and what lies ahead next. With Cyrene garnering both King Edric and Prince Kael's attention, only one gets a hold on Cyrene's heart. Jealousy strikes also with Queen Kaliana at bay and staking her claim by the King's side.

With how much the story unfolded so far, I'm very intrigued with where the storyline will take us next. All the bits of information that the author has fed us so far is enough to sate our curiosity but yet leaves us dying for more. The Affiliate is a great start to a potentially amazing series and I'm excited to what lies ahead next for Cyrene and the rest!

The Affiliate is the first book in The Ascension Series and is of YA fantasy genre.
