Is it possible to be so confused but still be completely awed by a story after putting it down? Every time I pick up a Courtney Lane book, I know I’m in for some mindf*ck of a twisted dark ride but she still manages to catch me offguard every single time! I don’t even know where to begin with this review because just as I thought I had things figured out, NOTHING is always as it seems when it comes to her books. Allow me to gather my thoughts as I still absorb the shock of the twist.
Eventhough it’s been exactly a year since I finished The Sect, I still recalled how that book messed with my mind and had me staying up till 5am to buddy read it with my blog wife. The theories were endless and Noah- oh god he was such an enigma. After a rather satisfying ending in the Sect, I was curious to see whether Courtney will take us next by reopening this story arc. Little did I expect that the road to redemption was far from over for our characters.
The Noah in this book seemed like a completely different character, it almost felt like he was a whole another character on its own. His actions had me furious and enraged but later had me confused and conflicted.
“I lie to you constantly Keaton. The sad thing is, I don’t think you’ll ever know what’s true and what’s false about me.”
Keaton on the other hand, I can see the reason that is guiding her reactions but half of time, I feel like yelling at her to self-persevere. Some of these brutal scenes literally had me wincing and shuddering as I read because I can’t even begin to imagine the brutality of it. But what I really loved about this one is there’s a new player in town now. He’s like the knight in the shining armor to save the damsel in distress that is Keaton and he is oh-so-swoony. At this point, I’m like “Noah who?”.
Without giving away a huge chunk of the plot details, all I can assure you is: whatever you think you know about what went down in The Sect, think again. The sequel brings out a whole new level of beast that none of you will see coming. Courtney has outdone herself with this one. The last 15% of the read was the real kicker that threw me off and quite frankly, I don’t know why I didn’t see this twist coming! That’s a rhetorical question because Courtney never fails to stump me even after reading almost all of her books. She always finds a way to outsmart her readers and truly, that’s why she’s an auto-buy author for me.
Now I’ll just be twiddling my thumbs as I await anxiously on the next book to see how this will all unfold.
