The Cityscape Series tells a compelling story of devotion, deception, and forbidden love. Come Undone is book one of three.
Olivia Germaine has already found love. Devoted wife, loyal friend, determined career woman–she’s created the life she always envisioned. But when Olivia locks eyes with a handsome stranger across a crowded room, he peers a little too closely and sees emotions she thought she’d buried long ago.
David Dylan, alleged playboy and eternal bachelor, challenges Olivia to confront the life she’s built and to make decisions that could either lead to happiness... or regret.
Will Olivia be able to draw the line between lust and love? And can David respect that line?
One married woman, one single man, one scorching look across a theater equals one heckuva angsty start to this three part series!
Olivia Germaine is a happily married associate editor living in downtown Chicago with her husband Bill. Three years married, she loves her husband, an overworked local prosecuting attorney. Everything is great...until she sets eyes on a man across a crowded room. Inky black hair, pale brown eyes...mesmerizing.
David Dylan is a renowned architect in Chicago. One of the most eligible bachelors in the city, he's currently nominated for a large piece in a Chicago magazine highlighting the best of the best in bachelorhood. He's happy to oblige, good advertisement and all, especially when he sets eyes on the woman from the theater. She's the editor for this piece and the woman he can't seem to take his eyes off of.
So what does one do when your current 'happy life as you know it' is suddenly thrown totally off its axis by an insane attraction to another person? Suddenly it's takes every ounce of effort just to withstand the pull between her and David. Avoidance. Strict avoidance. Except this piece for the magazine is pivotal for her career and he's the show stopper.
So obviously this is one giant book about cheating. But hey, Jessica Hawkins excels at this trope so I couldn't wait to try out this trilogy. So if cheating is a hard limit, turn and walk the other way. I personally love it. I love the angsty conflict and that push and pull you get with these kind of stories.
At first I felt the book built a little slow. To say it was a slow burn is very much the truth. It took me about 40% for it to gain the momentum for me to basically not put it down till the last page. I often wondered to myself why Liv married Bill. They seemed more like best friends than lovers. Though she does love him. Liv has quite a bit of emotional baggage from her parents divorce she lived through in her teen years and I'm not sure her self esteem is all that high. But it takes a perfect specimen of successful man that's David Dylan to shatter her house of cards. She tries...oh she tries to push him away but their draw is palpable. Liv had such control because, not gonna lie, David Dylan was one man hard to turn down.
"Olivia, I’ll put on a show in front of your friends, at your work, whenever we’re in public. But I’m growing tired of pretending when we’re alone. Don’t tempt me.”
Jessica Hawkins excels at building that anticipation so when the deed finally happens, hold onto your ovaries, ladies! David is worth the wait!
I'm 100% invested in this story and plan to promptly move along to the next installment. Come Undone is the first book in a three part series and ends in a cliffy.
Jessica Hawkins grew up between the purple mountains and under the endless sun of Palm Springs, California. She studied international business at Arizona State University and has also lived in Costa Rica and New York City. To her, the most intriguing fiction is forbidden, and that's what you'll find in her stories. Currently, she resides wherever her head lands, which is often the unexpected (but warm) keyboard of her trusty MacBook.
