Welcome to Hartwell, a quiet seaside escape where uncovering old secrets could lead one woman to discover the meaning of a love that lasts…

While Doctor Jessica Huntington engages with the inmates at the women’s correctional facility where she works, she’s always careful to avoid emotional attachments in her personal life. Loss and betrayal taught her that lesson long ago. But when she comes across a set of old love letters in the prison’s library and visits the picturesque town of Hartwell to deliver them to their intended recipient, she finds herself unable to resist the town’s charm—and her attraction to the sexy owner of a local bar proves equally hard to deny.

Since his divorce from his unfaithful ex-wife, Cooper Lawson has focused on what really matters: his family and the boardwalk pub they’ve owned for generations. But the first time Jessica steps into his bar, Cooper is beyond tempted to risk his heart on her. Yet as their attraction grows hotter and Jessica remains stubbornly closed off, he begins to realize it will take more than just passion to convince her there’s only one real thing in life worth fighting for….

When one of my all time favorite author decided to write another new romance series, there was no way that I wouldn't jump at the chance of reading it. Falling in love with Sam Young's On Dublin Street series, I was excited to meet another group of new characters taking place in a whole different setting. And that was exactly what Samantha Young delivered with this new start of a series.

Dr Jessica Huntington works as a physician in a female prison and has a deep compassion for helping those in need. But one day when she finds a set of old letters written by a female inmate to her lover, Jessica felt that there should be more to this than her current life. With a vacation trip to fulfill, she decided to take a trip to Hartwell with a mission to deliver those unsent letters.

I really loved this new world that Samantha created with Hartwell and I was truly surprised by how easily I came to fall in love with all these new characters. It's like stepping into this lush homely environment while getting to know this new diverse group of people. There's Cooper, our main hero of this story who owns a bar called Coopers' (ha!) and he had his fair share of betrayal coming from his ex-wife and best friend. Then there's Bailey, whom I absolutely adored and she runs an inn which Jessica was staying at. Not to mention, there's Emery who runs a bookstore and Mr Beautiful aka Vaughn who runs a hotel that rivals with Bailey.

There's still a couple more of characters that I haven't mentioned above but rest assured, it makes up for a wonderful setting that really gives Hartwell the burst of color it deserves. I was almost a little afraid when I first started the book, thinking if this book would keep me invested but as soon as I stepped into Hartwell, I knew that this would be the place I'd rather be.

The romance between Jessica and Cooper was a nice slowburn, with Cooper persistent on wooing the female doctor. Jessica has her reservations due to her past secrets but all that will be revealed slowly as the story progresses. There's also a nice mix of plot drama thrown in with Cooper's ex making an appearance plus a certain rich family empire that threatens to tear down Cooper's place.

All I can say that there isn't a dull day in the boardwalks of Hartwell.

Overall, The One Real Thing proves to be a promising start in this new contemporary romance series by Samantha Young. I can say that fans of her On Dublin Street series who share the same sentiment with me on how they will find this new one, especially getting to meet these new amazing characters!

I can't tell you how excited I am that the next book will be featuring Bailey and Vaughn, because hot dayum those two have some dynamite sexual tension going on already.
